We are saddened to announce the passing of Rocky, our black rockfish, at the end of 2023. Rocky, who had his eye removed in 2018 due to an infection, was a beloved ambassador for rockfish at Feiro. Named by a resident of Port Angeles, Rocky endeared himself to both staff and volunteers.

Despite missing one eye, Rocky’s health journey never failed to impress and surprise our guests. Black rockfish can live up to 50 years, while some other rockfish species can surpass 100 years. Sharing insights into their long lives was always well-received. Discussing the eye-removal surgery performed by veterinarian Dwight Waknitz became a learning experience for tens of thousands of visitors. We explained the intricacies of the procedure, including how fish can undergo anesthesia, the vet tech’s role in keeping Rocky’s gills oxygenated during surgery, and the acknowledgment that fish can feel pain, but can also be treated with appropriate medication. This information allowed guests to gain a deeper understanding and empathy for fish as animals.

Staff and volunteers ensured Rocky’s well-being with his single eye by facilitating target feeding, sparking numerous questions from curious visitors. Additionally, we addressed naturally occurring parasites through preventative freshwater baths with reverse osmosis water generously supplied by Olympic Springs.

Observing Rocky’s change in behavior and reduced appetite, we sought the expertise of a new veterinarian with aquatics knowledge, after the retirement of Dr. Waknitz. Unfortunately, Rocky passed away before the vet could examine him. Despite this loss, we are now collaborating with the veterinarian to develop health care plans for our other fish, which is possible thanks to individual donations to our Animal Health Care fund.

While Rocky’s exact age remains unknown, his significant time at Feiro allowed us to learn and benefit from his presence. We are grateful for the support that enabled him to live a fulfilling life, and we appreciate the opportunity to share his story with you.
