Watershed
VIRTUAL PROGRAM
Join educators from Feiro Marine Life Center and Dungeness River Center as we take 4th and 5th-grade students on a virtual field trip to their local watershed. Students will use scientific skills of observation and analysis to understand the challenges salmon face in watersheds, build awareness of how everyday human activities can impact the watershed, and propose solutions for creating healthier watersheds.
Watch the videos below and follow along using the Student Workbook and Teacher Curriculum for additional learning activities.

Watershed Introduction
Introducing Watershed Science Program
Join educators from Feiro Marine Life Center and Dungeness River Center as we take 4th and 5th-grade students on a virtual field trip to their local watershed. Students will use scientific skills of observation and analysis to understand the challenges salmon face in watersheds, build awareness of how everyday human activities can impact the watershed, and propose solutions for creating healthier watersheds.

Episode 1
What Is a Watershed?
In this series, students will explore 1 – 2 different watersheds (and potential salmon habitats) on the North Olympic Peninsula. Using science skills of observation and analysis, we will go on a journey to answer the question “Are these watersheds healthy habitats for salmon?”

Peabody Student Workbook pages: 4-7
Dungeness Workbook pages: 8-11

Episode 3
360 Exploration of Habitat at Peabody Creek
Students can immerse themselves in the Peabody Creek watershed, observing the habitat in virtual reality with this 360 degree video of the environment. Listen and look all around you on this virtual environmental education exploration.
Peabody Teacher Workbook pages: 29-35
Peabody Student Workbook pages: 10-11

Episode 3B
360 Exploration of Habitat at Dungeness River
Students can immerse themselves in the Dungeness River watershed, observing the habitat in virtual reality with this 360 degree video of the environment. Listen and look all around you on this virtual environmental education exploration.
Dungeness Workbook pages: 12-13

Episode 4
Peabody Creek Water Quality
Students are invited to join this water quality data collection field trip in Peabody Creek. We will demonstrate methods for determining dissolved oxygen, pH, turbidity, temperature, and overall habitat health. How do these environmental factors impact salmon? Come along and find out on our virtual science field trip to this watershed.

Peabody Student Workbook pages: 12-13

Episode 4B
Dungeness River Aquatic/Water Insects
Students are invited to join this water quality data collection field trip in the Dungeness River. We will demonstrate how to collect macroinvertebrates, an indicator of ecosystem health. Come along on this virtual environmental science field trip to the Dungeness River watershed to help determine if the habitat is suitable for salmon.
Dungeness Workbook pages: 14-16

Episode 5
What Does Our Peabody Creek Water Quality Tell Us?
After we collected data on dissolved oxygen, pH, turbidity, temperature, and habitat health, it’s time for students to do some data analysis! Follow along in your science lab books. What does this environmental data tell us about if the watershed can be a suitable habitat for salmon?
Peabody Teacher Workbook pages: 36-44
Peabody Student Workbook pages: 14

Episode 5B
What Does Our Dungeness River Data Tell Us?
After we collected our water samples, it’s time for students to do some data analysis on macroinvertebrates! Let’s find out how to tell a mayfly from a stonefly and more! Follow along in your science lab books. What does this environmental data tell us about if the watershed can be a suitable habitat for salmon?
Dungeness Workbook pages: 17-18

Episode 6
Stewardship In Action
Students can hear from other students who have pledged to support salmon and learn how they too can make a positive difference for the environment. Wrap up our virtual environmental education field trip and apply everything you have learned by making your own pledge to help salmon. What can you do to help salmon?
