High school seniors in the state of Washington are required to complete a Senior Culminating Project for high school graduation. A Citizen Science program was developed at Feiro Marine Life Center to include junior and senior students, Peninsula wide, in a scientific data collection process that supports the requirements of their Senior Culminating Project. Feiro hopes that these efforts will increase student interest in science and science related careers and help students understand the key issues affecting the ocean today. These projects are partnership projects with lead agencies and support important citizen science work and include:
-
Plankton composition, abundance and seasonal variability
Key Questions:
1. Can we detect harmful algal blooms (HAB) and Vibrio parahaemolyticus in Port Angeles Harbor and do these provide early warnings to further east in the Strait of Juan de Fuca and Puget Sound?
2. Is plankton species composition changing over time?Sponsoring Agency: Olympic Region Harmful Algal Bloom Partnership
Supervising Agency: Feiro Marine Life Center -
Megalops abundance in PA Harbor as it relates to health of crab in Puget Sound
Key Question:
What are the origins of the larval crab supply and what are the natural fluctuations in that supply?Sponsoring Agency: Suquamish Tribe
